Pronounced
kar-poon, this island at the tip of the Great Northern
Peninsula projects into the famous 'iceberg
alley'.
A thousand
years ago, Icelandic Vikings rounded Quirpon for shelter at the
first Viking settlement in North America at L'Anse aux Meadows,
only 8 kilometers away.
|
|

Over the past century sailing vessels
and steamships bound for continental ports, via the Strait of
Belle Isle, depended on the island's lighthouse for safe
bearings.
Today, the Quirpon Lighthouse Inn is host each summer
to guests who come to experience the magic of its cliff-top
perch overlooking the Labrador Sea -- highway for thousands of giant icebergs floating south from Greenland glaciers and
for Humpback whales and Orcas migrating north to feed in the
teeming waters off Labrador. With Newfoundland's longest iceberg
and whale season, Quirpon Island offers you your best chance to
spend time with these spectacular massive natural icons.

|
Quirpon
Lighthouse Inn has eleven private
rooms, eight with double beds, two with single beds and one
queen suite. Our indoor whale watching station allows you to
relax and watch the whales at your feet all day (and all night
under the full moon and Northern Lights!).
|
|

The
Lighthouse is an ideal haven for relaxing after a day of whale
watching, hiking the hills for berries or exploring the
coves by kayak. From the outside, the inn is built to withstand
the power of the North Atlantic weather; inside, the inn's
architecture and furnishings offer comfort and a snug shelter.
