CAPE
ANGUILLE
Lighthouse
Inn
A
Peaceful Landscape in an Idyllic Setting
|
 |
|

|
Cape Anguille Lighthouse Inn, a
Newfoundland & Labrador Registered Heritage Building, is a restored
century-old lightkeeper's home located in the Codroy Valley,
one of the most beautiful corners of Newfoundland. As the most
westerly point on the Island, Cape Anguille Lighthouse has
been a pivotal landmark for ensuring mariners safety being
built in 1905 in response to a tragic ocean disaster.
|
|
Surrounding
the lighthouse, the Atlantic Ocean provides a temperamental
backdrop to the peaceful landscape dotted with horses and
sheep wandering the meadows and hills.

Avid
birdwatchers will be made speechless by the rare and migratory
birds that visit each year. Watch eagles patrolling the cliffs
and silhouettes of osprey carrying fish to their young as the
sun sets over a limitless sea.
Some
guests have even been fortunate
enough to spot visitors such as the Hawk Owl.
A
must-see for birdwatchers is the Grand Codroy River Estuary.
Designated as a Wetlands of International Importance, the Estuary
is a Ramsar Site and the most important wetland in Newfoundland
and Labrador. Thousands of Canada Geese and Black Ducks use the
estuary during the fall and early winter.
Pintail,
Green-Winged Teal, American Wigeon, Greater Scaup, various
shorebirds, and even the endangered Piping Plover have been
seen. Local residents recognized the significance of this
estuary and had the estuary officially designated a "No
Hunting Zone" more than thirty years ago.
Other uncommon creatures occasionally put in an
appearance. In 2003, a very rare Beluga whale, lovingly
nicknamed Echo, called the area home and provided company for
swimmers and paddlers alike. With luck, our friend will return
to renew friendships again in the future.

We
have hiked the hills and coastline around the lighthouse and are
certain that all hikers will find enjoyable terrain and
spectacular views.
For
those that would rather hike with golf clubs in hand, St.
Andrews na Creige is a nearby jewel of a course. Enjoy a
game amid magnificent views of the Long Range Mountains.

Chatting
with the lightkeepers is a great way to pass time. The Patry's
were the first lightkeepers at Cape Anguille almost a century
ago and Leonard carries on the light keeping duties (and the
storytelling tradition). Born in the house, married in the
house, Leonard has a story about every room so get a coffee,
take a tour to the top of the light, and invite him to tell a
few.

Located
just 40 minutes from the Port aux Basques ferry, this is the
ideal spot to spend a night on your way to or from the ferry.
This is particularly true if your ferry schedule means you will
have to drive at night. Moose and cars don't mix well and as you
head north of this area the moose are plentiful at dusk and
throughout the night.
